Since people can't control the surface a product sits on, leveling feet are often needed to solve the problem that uneven planes create. Adjustable feet can be found in numerous styles and sizes that can be used for anything from small tabletop devices to benches and heavy duty machines. When choosing the leveling mounts that are appropriate for an application, one should note that different styles of products offer different features to suit different conditions.
One of the items to consider is the type of base material. For example, nylon is ideal if the product will be moved around frequently, as the material by nature has a self-lubricating, smooth, non-abrasive and non-marking surface. It is common to use nylon on the leveling mounts for items such as furniture or chairs, as they are items that by nature are moved frequently. Others choose to go with the aesthetic look of a bright zinc plated finish to match the metal or tubing of the product and for added strength of the base. Some have more of a hybrid base, with a polished metal shell hiding the actual nylon pad that makes contact with the floor. For the a truly economical model, some have lower quality plastic bases that work fine for desktop items or very lightweight units.
Adjustable Furniture Glides
The second item to consider for leveling mounts is what adjustment features are supplied on the foot. Economical versions designed for small items usually have minimal features because they can easily be adjusted by hand. Moving up in the offerings, features include an adjustment nut on near the base for adjustment from under the final product that can be adjusted with the aid of a wrench. Next on the list is parts with a hex and/or slotted head for adjustments from above when it is difficult or impossible to adjust the foot underneath. A good example of this is computer server racking that is very large and heavy and cannot be moved easily, but one may have access to the mounts from the inside of the cabinet. Of course versions of them can be found with several or all of these features. For heavy items, articulating feet should be considered, because adjustments don't require the additional force (torque) to move the base during adjustments since the threaded stud moves independently of the base. It should be noted that each added feature will add to the overall cost of the unit, so it is wise to select just what is really needed for the application to avoid added costs.
The last item to consider is actual threaded stud on the part, as they are different sizes and lengths. The thread size will need to mate up in order to work, and are offered in common sizes. The length needs to be reviewed to not only make sure it is long enough but that it is not too long to fit inside the finished product. The thread can mate up to either a nut that is welded onto the product or with tubular products into a threaded insert glide that is made to not only receive the thread, but act as a tube insert that fits metal tubing and adds a threaded port at the end of the tube. They often are called threaded inserts or glides and can be supplied as simple 100% plastic parts to higher quality products that have a metal threaded inserts molded into the plastic to full metal parts. The problem with all metal parts is that certain metals interact with each other, like steel and aluminum, or they can rust or corrode thus destroying the cosmetic finish of a part.
The offering of leveling mounts is very diverse, but with a few ideas of what is needed, the selection should be very easy to pick the proper part for the application. Planning ahead can help, as developing a good mating feature with a simple tube insert that comes with a thread can make the production of unit easier. Sometimes an idea intended for table or desktops is not sensitive enough to need any leveling features, so the right part is a simpler solution. This could include stick-on feet that are just an adhesive based foot that sticks in place to a rivet foot that locks into place with a self-contained nylon rivet designed to snap into place with a simple push of the rivets head.
